first episode to start out the week
(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)Apparently Connie's going to put her tennis skills to use today. :D Note Steven's guitar and Connie's violin. Maybe more Stevonnie time?
Re: first episode to start out the week
I remember seeing some people speculate that they might update the show's opening because of the fact that all of the Crystal Gems have new designs, and sure enough, they actually did! Maybe it's just me, but it looks more like an anime? Not like it's a bad thing, it's just kinda surprising to see this sort of animation in American cartoons. It's refreshing though, and I love Greg's little electric guitar riff. :D
Haha, oh Pearl... You didn't have it easy, did you?

Something's going on in the Keep Beach City Weird blog. Ronaldo, just don't kidnap anymore people, OK? You're going to get hella arrested.

Even though it's only one line, there seems like lately Pearl has been shown to have a lot of shit hidden underneath. Rose's Scabbard made her seem like she's PTSD-torn war veteran, and now this episode has her like this:
To quote Steven, "That's suspicious."
BONUS - Here's the interview that they made to promote the new Stevenbomb: http://www.newsarama.com/24809-steven-universe-creator-talks-jailbreak-future.html There's lots of goodies in there, mostly talking about Ruby and Sapphire who we haven't seen much of at all. Maybe there's going to be an episode showing them off more?

Pearl is really probably a war veteran of sorts. It's sort of insinuated in Rose's Scabbard and bits of other episodes that she fought alongside Rose in some Gem civil war of sorts. Like 5000 years ago or something.
But why are alien communities always, like, planet-wide while we have countries who are constantly at each other's throats? Like the entire race attacks a planet or something. Or Gem culture. Western Gem culture? Eastern? Northern or whatever? Do they just live on a really tiny planet?))

My opinion so far: Yesterday, Crashing Sky/Rising Tides was kinda eh (mostly because I thought it was going to be something bigger), but it's this episode that I didn't suspect that makes me go "oh shit." Holy fuck. Can I say excellent job on creating the forced fusion beast animation? That legitimately freaked me out.
Shame we didn't get a chance to see more Ruby and Sapphire, but then again that's probably for the best, they would have been catatonic on the sidelines. ...What the fuck show am I watching again?
I know some people have been rethinking their ideas on Gem fusion being a somewhat creepy way to portray a relationship since there's the chance that the original people can get lost in the identity of the resultant fusion, but I think that it still checks out if you compare it to the real life changes in identity when in a long-term relationship. An example would be a couple who's been living together long enough that they can't really imagine life without the other. Another would be your parents: kinda hard to imagine that these people used to have separate lives and identities a way long time ago, but together, they form the incredible, unified identity that is simply being your plain-old boring parents. :P
But yeah, this episode was great, and I'm kinda afraid to see what else this show is going to pull on me. Still looking forward to tomorrow though!
"We Need to talk"
Re: "We Need to talk"
(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I agree with you completely on Greg stuff being the best. Has anybody else noticed that with exception to the recording left in Rose's special place, all of the episodes featuring Rose and Greg have been literally dark, with poor illumination? SYMBOLISM!
Woah, this episode also showed me that Pearl is also kinda fucked up. Hella jealous/insecure about Rose paying more attention to Greg more than you? Tell that dude that he's going to die eventually.
Garnet continues to be cool though. ◦;)

New Theme!
Feel free to reply here, or in the Suggestions and Improvements Thread. Your opinion is valuable, and helps me out with trying to make sure that Steven Universe Daily is the best that it can be!
Anyway, this has been your announcement for the day. I hope everybody's having fun, and that you're enjoying the show. Keep being awesome, everyone! ;)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)1) So Pearl says that she wasn't meant to be a fighter, but if not, then what was she before and why is her gem weapon a spear? Was it ever anything else? How do Gems change that part about themselves?
2) Gem shards. It seems like Gems don't have the ability to actually die... Even when they're shattered to pieces, they still come back, but just as a random assortment of screaming limbs. And they're stuck like forever. I think humans got the better end of the stick in regards to that.
3) Rose's decision to give Steven a chance to live. This is pure speculation, but maybe Steven was Rose's way of being able to fuse with Greg since she was never able to.
Thanks for making this place, btw! The problem with Tumblr is that it's pretty hard to have a conversation with others because I don't know all the tags to look through.

2) Yeah, ick, for all the cool abilities you could gain, the setbacks to being a gem seem even more horrifying in proportion. Then again, from a gem's perspective, I'm sure they feel the same way about humans. (A fleshy, easily destructible substance that can't repair itself and even shut down entirely? How can they live at all!)
3) I never thought of it that way! That seems very possible.

This episode was really raw. I really felt for Amethyst and Pearl, and the "Cry For Help" title just gets sadder in retrospect.
It was really impressive on a meta level, too; both in the use of the Crying Breakfast Friends juxtaposed in between scenes and the last line of the episode. We, like Steven, often look to works of media with positive messages, or tackle down-to-earth issues we struggle with confronting in real life (Steven Universe is one of these works of media, for many!). We often expect episodes like these to end with advice or clarity and closure as many prior episodes have; but like life, sometimes things just don't go that way.
"It sure would be nice if things worked out the way they did in cartoons."
Amethyst's line serves as both to deliver the episode's message "Sometimes, there aren't any easy ways out" as well as give some fourth-wall-breaking-reassurance for people who are attached to and identify with this show that their favorite characters sometimes don't know what to do, either. It's something the show already does continuously (that is, reassure us that our favorite characters can make the same kind of mistakes and screw-ups we can), but here it addresses it upfront.
Also, the Crying Breakfast Friends are now the Shadow Girls from Utena of the series.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 06:26 am (UTC)(link)One thing that I think this week going to be about is pointing out that both Amethyst and Pearl keep running to Garnet for support in a very desperate way. They are just lapping at the chance to get to fuse and feel valued by Garnet, but their messed up mental states keep getting out and in the way.
Pearl is so messed up in this episode once she got a taste of any sort of love or validation. She probably did worse in her attempt to get Rose's attention, but now that Rose is gone, she's resorting to trying to milk Garnet for that love drug.
Oh god this episode is going to make me into a Garnet/Pearl shipper isn't it?
Oh god x2, we haven't seen Garnet crack yet (if you don't count Keeping it Together's PTSD episode), but I imagine that if we keep seeing the Gems try to fill the holes in their hearts by drawing on her too much as their sole source of love and validation, then even Garnet's not really going to take it too well...
I kinda think that Sugilite's primal roar is just a perfect end to this episode. No closure. Just pain.

How the hell did Garnet and Sapphire even hook up in the first place? One's an angry fire elemental, and the other is a future-seeing quiet cyclops.
Together they fight crime.I gotta admit that when they do get along, they're pretty cute and bring out the best in each other though... One of these days, they just gotta have a chill episode where they split up for funsies though, because they're pretty cool.Steven Universe - Depicting this modern zeitgeist of craigslist transactions.

Enjoy seeing Pearl smile. If the Sardonyx Week promo art of her is any indication, this is probably the last time we'll see her in good spirits for a while...

This episode combined my love of bad acting, bad fanfiction, and surprise appearance of pewey (hoooolllyyy shiiiit----!!! \(;゚∇゚)/*✲゚*。✧*)
Ahem...
It was nice that Pearl managed to find some appreciation the residents of Beach City to help pick her up from her gloom. Perhaps in the future, Pearl might come to have some warmer feelings towards the world outside the temple?

Peridot's Starscream/Zim deal has been pretty funny, but I want to her to be a legit threat more. Steven's good-natured approach to her given that she tried to kill him once is pretty great, though.

edit: It seems like aren't meant to be independent beings on Homeplanet, whether that's because of strange alien rock biology, or a restrictive caste system is in place. Rose and Garnet seemed like they recognized that Gems could reach a new potential than what has ever been seen before by living free on Earth, but Pearl's still stuck in the old ways, and what her existence means on her own. She's been trying to find a purpose to go on better than "it's what Rose would've wanted," while at the same time trying to hide her codependency. She understands that Rose was trying to let her live free, but Pearl would love it if Rose just tell her how to do exactly that. A bit of a dilemma that she has made the first step in solving by admitting.
Pearl herself has been shown to be obsessed with symmetry, fact keeping, holoprojection, mathematical harmony. If Pearls had a role on Nomeworld, they were probably living computers/PDAs who would offer advice and outcomes, regardless of whether a higher up would follow it or not.
