This episode was really raw. I really felt for Amethyst and Pearl, and the "Cry For Help" title just gets sadder in retrospect.
It was really impressive on a meta level, too; both in the use of the Crying Breakfast Friends juxtaposed in between scenes and the last line of the episode. We, like Steven, often look to works of media with positive messages, or tackle down-to-earth issues we struggle with confronting in real life (Steven Universe is one of these works of media, for many!). We often expect episodes like these to end with advice or clarity and closure as many prior episodes have; but like life, sometimes things just don't go that way.
"It sure would be nice if things worked out the way they did in cartoons."
Amethyst's line serves as both to deliver the episode's message "Sometimes, there aren't any easy ways out" as well as give some fourth-wall-breaking-reassurance for people who are attached to and identify with this show that their favorite characters sometimes don't know what to do, either. It's something the show already does continuously (that is, reassure us that our favorite characters can make the same kind of mistakes and screw-ups we can), but here it addresses it upfront.
Also, the Crying Breakfast Friends are now the Shadow Girls from Utena of the series.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 06:26 am (UTC)(link)One thing that I think this week going to be about is pointing out that both Amethyst and Pearl keep running to Garnet for support in a very desperate way. They are just lapping at the chance to get to fuse and feel valued by Garnet, but their messed up mental states keep getting out and in the way.
Pearl is so messed up in this episode once she got a taste of any sort of love or validation. She probably did worse in her attempt to get Rose's attention, but now that Rose is gone, she's resorting to trying to milk Garnet for that love drug.
Oh god this episode is going to make me into a Garnet/Pearl shipper isn't it?
Oh god x2, we haven't seen Garnet crack yet (if you don't count Keeping it Together's PTSD episode), but I imagine that if we keep seeing the Gems try to fill the holes in their hearts by drawing on her too much as their sole source of love and validation, then even Garnet's not really going to take it too well...
I kinda think that Sugilite's primal roar is just a perfect end to this episode. No closure. Just pain.
